Remote Learning for May 10-May 14
Hi, everyone! This is big Week 5 of Remote Learning! We have gotten several updates from WCPSS and NCDPI - so please make sure you read all of our Weekly Class Announcements this week. I will also be around during our Google Meet and via email to answer any questions. Ok, let's get started...
1. Read our Weekly Class Announcements! Click the button on the right. 2. Finish reading Night if you haven't already. The text link is below. 3. Elie Weisel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Click the button to the right and read an excerpt of his acceptance speech. 4. Do you remember SOAPStone?! It is a reading strategy that we use when reading a nonfiction text! You will use it a lot if you move onto AP English next year. Click on the SOAPStone button to review what SOAPStone looks like. Then, for your own practice, try to identify the SOAPStone pieces in the Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech. That is it for this week - we will talk more about Night and start wrapping up a few other things for the semester during next week's lesson! ** Google Meet Sessions are from 10:30-11. The "Meet Join Code Nickname" will be provided at 10:20 on meeting days. See below. 2nd period - 4th period- slarsenwf4 **** My Office Hours are Mon-Fri from 2:00-3:00. Remote Learning for May 4-May 8
Welcome back to Week 4 of Remote Learning! You know the drill at this point... :)
1. View our Weekly Class Announcements - see the button to the right. 2. Last week we started reading Night. I encouraged you to question how MILLIONS of people were put on train cars and sent to concentration camps with no major resistance. What did you notice about how their rights were taken away? Today we will focus on the psychological concept of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and how this relates to chapters 1-3 (And eventually the rest of the book). 3. Watch this video to see what is the concept of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Click on the video button to the right. 4. Complete the Maslow/Night Question by clicking on the button to the right. This will count as your class participation this week! :) 5. Read chapters 4-6 of Night this week. Remember there are buttons from last week that have the audio and a study guide for Night. This might be helpful to you with your reading assignment. ** Google Meet Sessions are from 10:30-11. The "Meet Join Code Nickname" will be provided at 10:20 on meeting days. See below. 2nd period - 4th period- **** My Office Hours are Mon-Fri from 2:00-3:00. Feel free to email me any questions that you may have. |
Remote Learning for April 27-May 1
Welcome to Week 3 of Remote Learning! Already?! This week we are going to be starting a new "unit" with reading Night and looking at WW2 information. Normally we would spend a few days exploring the background history, author history, and pre-reading concepts. I really wish we could do this part together, but we will have to settle with doing it virtually - hence why this week you will see lots of little video clips that will try explain that background information for this unit. :)
1. Make sure your volume is up and click on our Class Weekly Announcement Button for details about our class this week! I made a video out of this one- in order to talk to you about a few points(and books). Make sure you can hear it. :) 2. We are leaving WW1 and going into WW2. Please click on the WW2 Background Video button. This video clip will explain some of the cultural dynamics going into WW2. These are things that might be helpful to know about prior to reading Night. 3. Night is about the Holocaust - and part of it is set in Auschwitz. Did you know that there are still parts of Auschwitz remaining? You can see the drone footage of what it looks like now by clicking the button that says Auschwitz Drone. This is a great way for you to visualize the setting for some of our chapters. 4. Now let's get to know our author - Elie Wiesel. He is an amazing person who survived the Holocaust and dedicated his life to encouraging the kindness of humanity. He wanted to make sure a genocide never happened again. He even won a Nobel Peace Prize for his admirable work. Elie Wiesel also did a documentary episode with Oprah, in which they went back to Auschwitz for the interview. Watch the clip by clicking on the button that says Oprah and Elie. 5. Ok, on to the reading - Click the button that says Night. This will be your online text. You can start by reading the sections/chapters 1-3 of Night. Note the small "changes" that happen to Elie and his family. Notice how the rights of the Jewish people are slowly taken away - almost to the point that they don't realize they are in trouble until it is too late. We will discuss this more next week! Optional Night Resources: If you see (to the right) - there are also two extra Night Buttons for extra help, if needed. There is the audio of Night - which might be helpful to those of you who prefer to listen to the story. There is also an optional study guide for those of you who need help remembering the details of the story. I hope these will be great resources for you! |

Week of 3/16-3/20:
There is no assigned/required work while we are out of school, per WCPSS. However, here are a few optional/supplemental things that you can work on in the meantime. Stay safe and healthy! Enjoy your time at home and I hope to see you soon! Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Again, this is NOT required or graded material - this is optional.
- Our school is doing a Virtual Spirit Week. You can see the school website and social media pages for flyer of the days. Students can tag pictures to our Counselor's social media pages (Twitter and Instagram). We are hoping this will spread some cheer and allow students to virtual socialize. 🙂
- WCPSS sent out an email (I am sure you already got this) about digital learning. They have created a site that has virtual learning websites that can help students continue to stay engaged in learning. Feel free to explore it here. https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/instructional-continuity-wcpss
- This week I will be putting in some grades from our last week that we attended school. If your child was absent for any of these grades, I will exempt them. Sorry for the delay in grading, but I was waiting to see what all was going to happen last week.
